6 Essential elements of a summer emergency road kit

No matter how far you are going on your road trips this summer, safety should be your number one priority, and nothing matters more than carrying a well-stocked summer emergency road kit. For best results, the following important elements should be considered absolutely essential.
Never underestimate how hot it can get in a car on a long day of summer driving, especially when the temperatures soar into the 30’s, which makes it vital that you have more than enough water for everyone on board. Keep in mind that the average person requires approximately 2 litres of water each day in order to avoid dehydration.
One of your best defences against getting a bad sun burn this summer is to apply ‘full spectrum’ sunscreen (the higher the SPF the better), making it smart to always carry a large bottle of it on board with you. Don’t forget to keep an eye on its expiry date as well and replace it as necessary; after all, expired sunscreen will usually be far less effective.
Extreme temperatures can cause a vehicle’s battery to lose power faster than usual, leaving you vulnerable when you need it most; however, you can help to safeguard against this unfortunate scenario by carrying your own mobile battery charger. If nothing else, at least carry a set of jumper cables on board, as this way all you’ll need is another vehicle willing to help and you’ll be on your way in no time.
There are a lot of factors that can cause you to be on the road far longer than planned – such as delays dues to traffic, construction, or wildlife – in which case, having a decent supply of food on board can make a huge difference. Non-perishable items are always best, such as canned fruit, protein bars, or even chocolate, so don’t forget to top up your supplies before you head off.
First aid kit
You should always have a well-stocked first aid kit on board, regardless of the season, although in summer there are a few extra items well worth adding. Aside from carrying a wide range of band aids and bandages, it is wise to have creams and ointments for dealing with all manner of bites, cuts, and burns. Instant ice packs are another handy addition, as are scissors, tweezers, and tick removing tools.
Having a fully-charged phone on board can be an absolute game-changer, especially if you want to stay in touch with loved ones; need directions; or have to call for help. Thankfully, nowadays you can get portable phone chargers for as little as $20 that provide hours of extra power, so if you haven’t done so already, invest in one ASAP.
