There is no better way to celebrate the summer than by heading off on a camping adventure and when you live in Manitoba you don’t need to go far to find something special. Here we will look at some of the best summer camping destinations near Winnipeg, so do yourself a favour and check out at least one of them this year.
Birds Hill Provincial Park
Located approximately 24km northeast of Winnipeg, Birds Hill Provincial Park is one of Manitoba’s most beautiful camping destinations; it is also home of the annual Winnipeg Folk Festival which takes place from July 5-8 this year. This is a fantastic place to swim, bike, fish, and paddle; the White Cedar Forest Trail is a must for anyone that loves to hike; and you are sure to find plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities as well, as there are dozens of species of birds and even a local herd of white tail deer. The campground is spacious, clean, and open from May to October, with both powered and unpowered sites available.
Winnipeg Beach Provincial Park
This gorgeous location can be found approximately 77km north-east of Winnipeg and is perfect for anyone looking for a great place to camp this summer. Whether you like birding, boating, fishing, cycling, hiking, golfing, or waterskiing, you’ll find ample opportunities to do so here, and if you come during Boardwalk Days (in July) you’ll be treated to fireworks, live bands, rides and more. There is also plenty of clean, safe, and well-maintained camping sites available nearby, but be sure to book early!
Norris Lake Provincial Park
Head north-west roughly 76km from Winnipeg and you will find a true summer paradise, as this great spot has something for everyone. Perfect for fishing, paddling, boating, waterskiing, swimming or even just relaxing with your favourite cold beverage, Norris Lake Provincial Park is also close to two fun and challenging golf courses. While camping in the park is limited (consisting of 15 basic sites and 3 group sites) it is well worth booking early, as the sites are clean, spacious and set amongst peaceful groves of oak and poplar trees.
St. Malo Provincial Park
Well known for its calm waters and stunning natural beauty, this popular provincial park is located approximately 74km south of Winnipeg. It is a great place for birding, boating, biking, hiking, and swimming, and also features volleyball courts, mini-golf, and a fantastic children’s playground. Furthermore, educational children’s programs are held all summer long; the annual St. Malo Summer Festival provides a guaranteed highlight each September, and a wide variety of private serviced campsites are available nearby, but once again, book early.
