"There are not a lot of yardsticks for measuring the quality of service of used-car dealers," says Gord Pedersen, co-owner (with Dan Gagnon) of Auto Gallery of Winnipeg. "That is why being chosen as the Top Choice award winner for the fourth year in a row and being cited as the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce's first Small Business Excellence award winner is so much appreciated." The latter honour was presented to Gagnon and Pedersen at an awards evening at the Glendale Golf and Country club on June 3. The Top Choice award, which was presented to Auto Gallery earlier in the year, is based on repeat and referral business. "More than 50 per cent of our business is repeat and referral," says Pedersen. "I recently asked our receptionist what she hears from customers who come back again and again. She noted that she came to work for us because she and her father had purchased a vehicle from us and she was very impressed by the sales experience. We try to make people feel comfortable by treating them the way we would treat family and friends." Gagnon and Pedersen opened Auto Gallery nine years ago at 3777 Portage Ave. (just east of the Perimeter highway). The company specializes in newer used models with low mileage and generally with some warranty left. "We also offer our own extended full-coverage warranty up to seven years," Pedersen says. "Dan tries very hard to make sure we buy the right vehicles for our customers. He gets down on his hands and knees to examine each vehicle before we buy it. The vehicle has to be up to our standards." For the first two years that the national award was given out by the Toronto based institution Top Choice Awards, Auto Gallery was the only auto dealer in Canada - new or used - to be recognized in the Top Choice Award program. In order to meet rising demand, Auto Gallery has increased its standing inventory to more than 250 vehicles, Pedersen reports. "People like to have a good selection," he says. The awards for Auto Gallery also reflect well on the dealership's staff, Pedersen adds. "Our staff have been instrumental in helping create a comfortable and satisfying buying experience for our customer," says Pedersen. "We are so proud of our staff for earning these awards. They work hard at customer service and it is nice for them to see this kind of result.
